Pope’s Enclave

This wealthy place, known since Prehistory, used to host a significant part of the commentary of Templiers in the XIIe century and was acquired by the Avignon’s Popes at the beginning of the XIVe century. Upon creation of French states, following the French revolution, the inhabitants of Valréas, Visan, Richerenches, and Grillon decided through a vote to keep attached to the Vaucluse state. It involved the creation of the Vaucluse’s enclave inside the Drome Provençale!

The Drome Provençale has a wide and unique architectural heritage notably thanks to its majestic castles.

The Grignan’s Castle, the biggest castle from south eastern part of France of the Renaissance became famous with Marquise de Sévigné’s epistolary relationship. It is offering one magnificent view toward the nearby landscapes including the famous Mont Ventoux.  Many cultural events are taking place including nightly celebration inside the Castle itself



The official opening of the truffle’s market starts in november (saturday following the 11/15) and keep on until marsh. Every Saturday morning from 9 AM to 1PM, Traders, Truffle-Harvesters, tourists and curious souls are getting on the Rabassh avenue and the Cours du Mistral.

Dans un jeu d’ombres et de lumière qui anime les parois et dévoile les draperies, les œuvres se révèlent. Des centaines d’animaux, de quinze espèces différentes apparaissent. Peint à l’ocre rouge, gravé au silex, tracé au doigt ou au fusain, le bestiaire prend vie tant les techniques de l’estompe et de la perspective sont maîtrisées.

Pendant une heure, vous déambulez sur une passerelle ponctuée de 10 stations d’arrêt et d’observation et découvrez les 27 panneaux de la caverne. Votre visite se termine par la grande fresque des lions, panneau monumental de douze mètres de long d’où surgissent 92 animaux en mouvement.
